Lynching in the United States - Wikipedia
Lynching, the practice of killing people by extrajudicial mob action, occurred in the United States chiefly from the late 18th century through the 1960s. Lynchings took place most frequently against African-American men in the Southern US after the American Civil War and emancipation, and particularly from 1890 to the 1920s, with a peak in 1892. Lynchings were also very common in the Old West, where victims were primarily men of Mexican and Chinese minorities, although whites were also lynched

'Strange Fruit' _Southern trees bear strange fruit, blood on the leaves & blood at the root, black bodies swinging in the southern breeze, strange fruit hanging from the Poplar Trees. Pastoral scene of the gallant South, the bulging eyes & the twisted mouth, scent of magnolias, sweet & fresh, than the sudden smell of burning flesh. Here is fruit for the crows to pluck, for the rain to gather, for the wind to suck, for the sun to rot, for the trees to drop, here is a strange & bitter crop!

History is heart-breaking. The way African Americans were treated was superfluous. especially since they (we) did nothing wrong. Sadly, this is the despicable way some people had fun; gathering to see a lynching.

In the last decades of the 19th century, the lynching of Black people in the South became an institutionalized method used by whites to terrorize Blacks and maintain white supremacy. From 1880 to 1940,there was deep-seated & all-pervading hatred & fear of the Negro which led white mobs to turn to “lynch law” as a means of social control. Lynchings—open public murders of individuals suspected of crime conceived & carried out spontaneously by a mob seem to have been an American invention.
