[Ridley] Scott is a little distant in the way he observes his characters and their dilemmas. The young boy is in mortal danger all through... but your heart is not as much in your mouth as it should be. Still, the film nails the time and place.

A generally exciting & rewarding film from Ridley Scott. His track record, for me anyway, is a bit uneven but this, true story dealing with John Paul the thirds addiction, turns out to be one of his better efforts. Plummer does a superb job replacing Kevin Spacey at pretty much the last minute due to the sexual scandal that prompted Scott to replace him. Playing the aging & unsympathetic John Paul Getty with so much nuance on short notice was quite a challenge which Plummer rose to with great success. Michelle Williams matches him as the determined mother of Getty‘s kidnapped grandson. Worth seeing with a minimal amount of a fictional indulgence.

Based on the true story and the people, this film is technically over the top directed by the skilful Ridley Scott. So much potential to tell about this family in a form of film, and I think this film achieved some point and dramatised the fact very well.

How can someone to have so much money, yet won't spare it for the people they love?! As a wealthy billionaire's nephew is kidnapped and held for ransom, the miserly man won't part with a single penny, spurring the boys mother and a former CIA operative to try to save the boy before it's too late. Based on the true life kidnapping, this film explores the difference between material wealth and parental love which are both powerful motivators of the initiated!

I watched the series with Donald Sutherland. I was 19 in 1973 never heard this. Although I did know who Getty was, oil. Immediately after watching the series, I watched this movie. Nether one, really true story. Based on true events. I go to Wkepedia. Very interesting and sad I thought. Actually this movie said at the end, things were changed to give it more drama. Drama??? The real drama is that kid being in acave for 5 months, plied with alcohol for pain and to stay warm because his grandfather was a sad excuse for a human, so says Wikepedia. Oh im suppose to be reviewing the movie. I gave it 4 stars, pretty good. The young actor Plummer, didnt have very many lines though.
