How to 3D print a NVG Dovetail mounting plate?

I'm going to 3D print a dovetail mounting plate for an nvg. How should I lay it on the build plate for max strength? Flat, vertical, or on its side?

Accepted answer

On its end. (Vertical) You want continuous loops of filament around the dovetail profile. Because typical stresses tend to pull the dovetail profile apart. Very little stress pulling the ends apart. So layers parallel to the ends would have little stress. Use at least 3 or maybe even 4 walls. Random start position. A little overextrusion and slightly higher temperature will help. You’re not after appearance. You’re after strength.

You want a dense infill. 70-90%. Don’t go above 90% as that adds little strength and can actually create its own stress.

For maximum strength, it is generally recommended to print the dovetail mounting plate for an NVG in a flat orientation on the build plate. This helps ensure good layer adhesion and overall stability.
