Please note that the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics uses CrossCheck™ software to screen papers for unoriginal material. By submitting your paper to the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics you are agreeing to any necessary originality checks your paper may have to undergo during the peer review and production processes.

SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS

The Journal of Business and Economic Statistics receives all manuscript submissions electronically via their ScholarOne Manuscripts website located a http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/amstat (select Journal of Business & Economic Statistics from the drop-down box). ScholarOne allows for rapid submissions of original and revised manuscripts as well as facilitating the review process and internal communication between authors, editors, and reviewers via a web-based platform. For ScholarOne Manuscripts technical support, you may contact them by e-mail or phone support via http://scholarone.com/services/support/.

JBES uses a double-blind reviewing process. Referees are not informed of the name or institution of the authors of submitted manuscripts, and the authors are not informed of the names of referees or the associate editor. Therefore, we request that two versions of the manuscript be supplied—a full version (unblinded) and another version with all marks that might identify the authors or their institutions removed; any identifiable sources of support should be removed along with obvious references to one’s own previous work. Authors should submit the following files:

– One PDF file of the blinded manuscript;

– One PDF file of the unblinded manuscript

Upon final acceptance for publication, a LaTeX or plain text file of the full text (without figures), along with individual files for all figures will be requested.

Preparation of Manuscript

General Formatting: The manuscripts should be prepared using 8 1 /2 x 11-inch pages, double-spaced, including key words and references, with margins of at least one inch all around all four edges. Normal-sized fonts (12 pt. should be used; the use of very small letters to save space is especially discouraged. Pages should be numbered consecutively. Authors are encouraged to use LaTeX if possible, and should use “article” style, avoiding the use of any special macros. Use of BiBTeX is encouraged, but authors should submit the .bbl file. The manuscript should contain an abstract and from 3 to 6 key words or phrases (that do not appear in the title) in alphabetical order. There is no maximum length for manuscripts, but it is much more difficult and time-consuming to get reviews for long manuscripts. An efficient writing style with selective use of tables and figures is appreciated. Manuscripts accepted for publication in the journal very rarely have more than 30 double-spaced pages, including text, figures, tables, and references.

PAPERS PUBLISHED IN PROCEEDINGS

Publication in a conference proceedings (refereed or not) does not preclude publication in an ASA journal.   ASA Journals have always operated under the policy that a paper published in the ASA

Proceedings may be submitted to an ASA journal with few or no changes and that policy will continue.  ASA journals are also receptive to publishing papers that have appeared in non-ASA proceedings.  For

non-ASA proceedings papers it is expected that the journal submission will be a more substantial and complete piece of research than the original conference proceedings paper as fitting the target ASA journal. The journal submission should have new content, be written for a statistical audience, and not violate copyright.  The central criterion for evaluation of the paper will be whether or not the paper is of interest to the journal's readership.  The ultimate decision about suitability for publication is at the discretion of the journal's editor.  Authors should describe in their cover letter to the editor what is new in the journal version compared to the conference paper and whether the conference paper is copyrighted.  The conference paper must be properly cited in the journal version.

SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL

Authors are encouraged to submit supplementary materials that are directly related to their papers. The supplements are subject to editorial review and approval. More information on supplements is available at http://journals.taylorandfrancis.com/amstat/supplementary-materials/.

SUBMISSION OF DATA SOURCES AND CODE

The ASA strongly encourages authors to submit datasets, code, other programs, and/or extended appendices that are directly relevant to their submitted articles. These materials are valuable to users of the ASA's journals and further the profession's commitment to reproducible research.

Whenever a dataset is used, its source should be fully documented and the data should be made available as on online supplement. Exceptions for reasons of security or confidentiality may be granted by the Editor.

Whenever specific code has been used to implement or illustrate the results of a paper, that code should be made available if possible.

STYLE/REFERENCES

All manuscripts should follow the style published in the ASA Style Guide ( http://journals.taylorandfrancis.com/amstat/asa-style-guide/ ).

FIGURES AND TABLES

Figures and tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals, and clearly titled and labeled. Placement of tables and figures should be in the body of the manuscript as soon as possible following their first reference. They should not appear in separate files or at the end after the bibliography.

COLOR REPRODUCTION

Color art will be reproduced in color in the online publication at no additional cost to the author. Color illustrations will also be considered for print publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Please note that color reprints can only be ordered if print reproduction costs are paid. Print Rates:  $400 per figure for the first four figures; $75 per figure for five or more figures.  Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print. Figures that are submitted in nonessential color will be converted to black and white or grayscale in the print version. For online only color, please ensure that: color figures and images submitted for publication will render clearly in a black & white conversion for print; the same figure must serve for both color and black and white. Do not submit two different sets of figure files; figure captions and the text of the article must not refer specifically to any color.

COPYRIGHT

Each manuscript must be accompanied by a written declaration that it has not been published elsewhere, that it has not been submitted for publication elsewhere, and that all co-authors have read the manuscript and agree to the accuracy of their manuscript. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the American Statistical Association. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the American Statistical Association. As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as “derivative reproduction” (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source).

ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPT ONLINE (AMO)

Manuscripts submitted to the journal are eligible for rapid online posting if a valid copyright form is received and nothing is missing from the paper. The original manuscript will be available on Taylor & Francis Online in a section on the journal’s page entitled “Forthcoming Articles.” Posted papers will be clearly labeled as the “Accepted, uncorrected manuscript” versions and will include DOI numbers so that the papers can be cited and referenced. Authors will also receive notification from Taylor & Francis when the manuscript is posted, when typeset proofs are available, and once again when the final version is posted. The papers in this section will be removed once the edited and final typeset version is posted online.

SUBMITTING REVISED MANUSCRIPTS

Revised manuscripts that are submitted more than 1 year after the last action by the editor (given an invitation to revise) may be considered as new submissions.

PROOFS

Page proofs are sent to the designated corresponding author using Taylor & Francis’ Central Article Tracking System (CATS). They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.

NIH FUNDING

As part of its author services program, Taylor & Francis will deposit to PubMed Central (PMC) author manuscripts on behalf of authors reporting NIH funded research. The corresponding author will be able to enter NIH grant information for all contributing authors via CATS. Taylor & Francis will deliver to PMC the final peer-reviewed manuscript. Taylor & Francis will also authorize the author manuscript’s public access posting 12 months after final publication in print or electronic form (whichever is the sooner). Following the deposit by Taylor & Francis, authors will receive further communications from the NIH with respect to the submission.

REPRINTS

Authors for whom we receive a valid email address will be provided an opportunity to purchase reprints of individual articles, or copies of the complete print issue. These authors will also be given complimentary access to their final article on Taylor & Francis Online.

PLAGIARISM

The American Statistical Association observes a policy of zero tolerance in cases of malfeasance by authors. These acts include plagiarism and submitting nearly identical papers to different publications. Authors who engage in these acts will have their papers rejected and their institutions will be notified of the rejection and its motivation.
